RU Ready to elevate your board?
Nonprofit boards are made up of passionate, dedicated individuals who care deeply about your mission. But let’s be honest—just because they’re on the same board doesn’t mean they know each other. And when board members are practically strangers, teamwork can feel…well, a little awkward.
Picture this: Your board is debating a big decision. Some members are quiet, unsure if their ideas will be welcomed. Others dominate the discussion. There’s tension, hesitation, and a general lack of flow. Sound familiar? That’s what happens when boards don’t take the time to build chemistry and goodwill.
Great Teams Don’t Happen by Accident
Strong boards function like strong teams. And what do great teams do? They connect beyond the conference table. They learn each other’s strengths, communication styles, and motivations. They share a laugh now and then, and maybe even a drink. This trust and camaraderie lead to more open discussions, better problem-solving, and (as an added bonus!) way more enjoyable board meetings.
How to Foster Board Bonding (Without It Feeling Forced)
Kick off meetings with personal check-ins. A simple “What’s something exciting happening in your life?” goes a long way.
Host informal gatherings. Consider coffee chats, happy hours, or even a casual pre-meeting meal.
Pair up board members for connection calls. A 20-minute chat between meetings can build surprising rapport.
Do a “Mission Moment” together. Volunteering as a group strengthens both relationships and commitment to the cause.
The result? A board that works together, trusts each other, and gets things done—without all the awkwardness. So go ahead, plan that happy hour. Your board will be a lot more effective… which means your nonprofit will be a lot better for it!
